I'm going to be moving again soon, hopefully for the last time. A few weeks ago I got a text message from my property management company, saying my apartment was going to be listed as available and they were going to start showing it to potential tenants. When I called them and asked what was going on, the person I spoke with said that back in November a letter was sent to me asking if I wanted to renew my lease or not, and since I didn't give an answer it was assumed I didn't want to. Well, for one thing, I have no memory of getting the letter (and I open all my mail). And for another, I signed the lease for this apartment on August 1st, for an entire year, so back in November, when the letter was supposedly sent, I had only been living here for three months and had a whole nine months left to go. Which seemed really premature to me. I talked to a few friends of mine who either rent now or have rented, and they all agreed that that was weird and ridiculous. I looked over my lease again, just to make sure I wasn't forgetting some detail in the fine print, but there was nothing--absolutely zilch--about having to decide whether or not to re-sign the lease that early in advance. I brought it up with my property managers and their response was: "Well, that's just how we do business." No explanation or anything, just that sentence, which sounded like a copout to me but what do I know. I asked if it was too late for me to make a decision, and if not, how long I still had. They told me I had a week. I asked then if my rent would increase the following year. I expected it would. What I didn't expect, however, was by how much. From my understanding, most of the time when rent is raised it's raised by about $20 to $30, maybe a little bit more. I was prepared for that kind of an increase. But no, I was told my rent would be going up by... get this... $100. That's right, $100, and that's not including electricity, water/sewage, internet, or anything. All of that I have to pay for separately. That's just rent. There's no way I can afford that, so my answer to my property managers was no. Which means I have until August 1st to find somewhere else to live.

I'm sorry this is going on. Hopefully they'll learn how to be sympathetic and stop pestering you with notices that make no sense. I'd report them to the authorities if I were you. But they might just bs their way out of being put out of business. Anyway, best of luck finding a new place. My prayers are with you. :tighthug:
